American Airlines Phoenix Pilot Base

Mon Oct 04, 2021 3:05 am

Is there an American Airlines pilot base in Phoenix? If there is, what equipment (Boeing or Airbus) can pilots bid for? Thank You Very much.

Pretty sure it’s been an Airbus base for a really long time.

They have 737 and A320 groups at PHX. Once upon, PHX was a 747 base......

Phoenix was the headquarters and main hub for America West and post-merger USAirways kept its headquarters there too. It’s predominantly an A320 base.

PHX is only an A32X base. No 737.

PHX has been exclusively an Airbus base since the 757's were parked approximately 18 mths ago. 738/M's transit PHX all day long but are flown by pilots from "other" bases. There haven't been 737 pilots based in PHX since LUS purged the 733/734 from their pre/post merger fleet.

No 777 or 787 pilots based in PHX either. Widebody pilots either fly in or are deadheaded in from DFW, LAX, CLT, PHL, ORD, JFK or MIA as needed to operate Hawaii, LHR or domestic as necessary (LHR is currently suspended).

Correct, 320 bases for AA are as follows:

LGA
PHL
DCA
CLT
MIA
DFW
PHX
LAX

737 bases are:

BOS
LGA
DCA
CLT
MIA
ORD
DFW
LAX

American Airlines? Or America West? I know America West during the time of their questionable foray into the wide body market with three 747s in the early 90's, based their pilots in PHX.

You're right with America West, used them for the PHX-Hawaii flights

I know PHX isn't a widebody base. I thought I read in an AA network thread in 2019 or so that PHX was getting a 737 pilot base.

It's only American Airlines in name only. Headquarters may be in Ft Worth, TX but everything else America West..... US Airways in other aspects...

PHX got quite a bit more 737 flying for a while, but I think the MAX issues probably prevented opening a base for the time being.
