European Airport Markings of Yesteryear

Sat Nov 06, 2021 2:03 pm

In another thread, someone linked a great Nelson Kreuger TWA memory video. Most of the scenes were from the early 1990s.

One of the scenes, linked below, shows a landing at CDG in 1991 or 92. I was surprised to see there were no runway edge markings and no taxiway shoulder markings.

I am pretty sure these safety features were already commonplace and required in many areas at the time. From other video/photos I could find those markings and features were already present at FRA, ZRH, AMS, and the old ATH. From a 1980s aerial, I noticed LHR had runway edge lines but no taxiway shoulder markings.

Just wondering if anyone knows what the ICAO standard would have been around that time and why CDG wouldn't have been in compliance. They have the markings now, so maybe they were done when one of the expansion runways opened in 1999.

From the 1994 Jepp it seems the TWA clip above was landing runway 27.
