Why HAL3 went north before going back down to HNL?

Tue Nov 30, 2021 6:53 pm

Saw this on Flightradar, HAL 3 from LAX to HNL went up the coast to nearly the Bay Area before swinging left to go down. https://www.flightradar24.com/HAL3/2a08f291
Why is that? I saw other planes from LAX to HNL just simply go straight down to HNL.

It looks like all of the HNL bound flights from SoCal were doing that. There may have been an offshore USN exercise or something?

Look at the Windy app, lots of tailwind if you fly that northern track

Interesting..that’s pretty rare here. I guess the big low offshore from SEA was sucking everything toward it.

What’s also interesting is, I ran a Global flight plan, but it so short a route the level was F470 with a short level off at F430. Went straight to PHNL with about no wind. Ran it again at F360, it went north of the 470 plan by enough to be north of the airway system using two L/L fixes and -20 knots of wind. Whether KZAK would buy it is another story, I’ve never seen Lat/Long fixes to HI.

You can fly lat long fixes to Hawaii. I’ve done it to go north of A track.

The fix or two was the Alpha track, so I just never have seen it.

While not direct, SFO is also closer to HNL than LAX is, so it wasn't a backtrack even though it was not a direct route.
