What is the range of landing speeds for the MD-11?

Wed Feb 02, 2022 7:52 pm

Someone told me that the landing speeds of the MD-11 are 20-30 miles per hour faster than the landing speeds of the DC-10. Don't know how to validate the veracity of that statement. Most pilots I know talk about speed in knots. Anyone know what the upper and lower limits of landing speed are for the MD-11?

It’s in knots, for sure.

Approach speeds are up there with the 747 and slightly faster than the DC-10 according to this document from Boeing:

This thread has more information on landing the MD-11:

Of course, in all aircraft it has to do with weight and the stall speed at that weight. Just a ballpark, the MD-11 at a high landing weight will have an approach speed of around 166 kts. The B747-200F could also be close to the same.

The Vapp at max ldg wgt was 168kts. Got to see it a few times. Better have your ldg data correct.

I remember the Flaps 30 max landing weight (630k#) on the 747-200 being 162. Flaps 25 was 167, I believe.

I operated some 747-200F with increased zero fuel weight that could land at 640k#. Approach was 164 without any wind adjustments.
For the MD-11 I cannot give you a minimum speed since I cannot recall every flying them particularly light. However, I did operate DC-10s that were so light the approach speed was in the 110kt range. More typical was 135-145.
