Cost Per Seat Mile

Sun Apr 17, 2022 4:53 pm

I see much information about airline cost per seat mile on line and in the forum. However, I am interested to know if these numbers assume any freight and allocate and cost to the freight.?

On a typical flight from ORD to LAX how much paid freight is generally on board? What percentage of a major airline's revenue come from freight?

Thanks

I believe CASM only takes into account self-loading cargo and seat availability/density, not belly cargo/freight:

https://www.investopedia.com/terms/c/casm.asp

"Cost per available seat mile (CASM) is a common unit of measurement used to compare the efficiency of various airlines."

There are lots of other variables that will effect trip costs and trip revenues, so CASM is not a perfect measure but one that can be applied universally.

CASM is only a measure per Seat Mile - how much of the trip cost is allocated per seat on the airplane. Cargo doesn't factor into that analysis. Cargo is a variable anyway, with some aircraft being able to carry substantially more than others and some routes having substantially more cargo demand than others.

In most cases freight does not matter for passenger airlines. As far as US companies are concerned, freight contributes less than 2% their overall revenue. There had been a discussion here on this forum about this dilemma some time ago.

There is different ways to measure capacity on aircraft, another common way is “available tonne kilometres” or “ATKs” the number of tonnes of capacity available for the transportation of revenue load (passengers and cargo) multiplied by the kilometres flown. With this measure of capacity passengers are turned into self loading cargo, each passenger and their baggage is considered to be 100 kg.

For traffic numbers they use “available tonne kilometres” or “ATKs” the number of tonnes of capacity available for the transportation of revenue
load (passengers and cargo) multiplied by the kilometres flown.

You can use this for the basis of cost, yield, and load factors.
