ROVE Callsign

Wed Apr 27, 2022 5:08 am

As I was scrolling through departures at ABQ tonight I noticed a peculiar callsign. Is anyone familiar with the callsign ROVE61 or just ROVE?

My initial thought was that it was military however I couldn’t find it on the list of military callsigns.

Looks like it’s been tracked throughout AZ, TX, and NM the last few days. Anyone have any insight?

Yup, because all of us on these forums are active duty military and we all have access to the latest NATO publications. It is therefore just sheer laziness for the OP to ask this simple question when he can just open up his personal military briefcase and figure it out on his own. (don't know how to put in a "sarcasm smiley" but if I did I would put it here. I suppose theres another military document I could look up the smileys options in)

I did a Google search. The only one I could find was this one from 1962. Is there a later edition?

It's not unusual to hear the ROVE callsign being used at the same time as KARL and SHRUB call signs with airborne aircraft, not sure why.

IAHObserver, because in some cases, the callsign is associated with the type of training mission being conducted.

At Columbus AFB, we had unique call signs for mission type, solo flights, formation, contact, cross-countries all had individual call signs.

Perhaps our fellow members only laugh at the jokes they'd most want to drink a beer with.
