I wanted to know for any of you technical guys out there, in the old days, CVRs used to use the old magnetic tape up until the 90s. Are there any aircraft still flying around today with magnetic tape CVRs instead of solid states? Or did the airlines convert the older aircraft to newer CVRs?
Any aircraft manufactured after 2010 should have all digital recorders. Prior to that, the flight data recorder was required to be digital after 1991, but not the cockpit voice recorder.
Not to be off topic or anything, but there was one accident in 2009 in which the operator still had the old tape roll style recorder, and get this; they were supposed to replace the recorder in 1995, 14 years before the crash!
So, yes, there are still aircraft flying around with this, but as long as they are replaced and maintained well, I see no problem. Azza Transport/Sudan clearly did not do this.
