Austrian using the polar route like SWISS and Lufthansa on the Tokyo to Vienna route

Good afternoon, Is it possible or feasible for Austrian to use the polar route on its return to Vienna from Tokyo just like how SWISS is doing with flight LX161 or Lufthansa with LH717?

If SWISS claimed it saves flight time and fuel, wouldn't it make sense for Austrian to do the same?

I even messaged them on Facebook with this suggestion and they said they would forward it to their respective colleagues and perhaps make any adaptations. I don't know if they would take the suggestion though but anyways.

What are your thoughts?

It seems likely that employees at Austrian have already had the idea. They may not be a huge airline in their own right, but Austrian is definitely competent at planning their own flights

The trans-Alaskan eastbound routing will not be more economical by default but just depending on the wheather and especially the jetstream. Also, the trans-Asian routing is full of ATC bottlenecks and the overall capacities are strictly limited.

Perhaps OS knows something you don't. I also think OS have a better idea on how to optimise performance on their flights, a lot more than any of us armchair CEO's think.

But just after some quick searching, OS52 NRT-VIE routing over China and Central Asia took 13h52m. LH715 HND-MUC with the same routing took 14h07m. LH717 HND-FRA routing over Alaska took 13h53m.

It's not as simple as counting miles vs speed to give you a total flight time, and thus fuel consumption and profit.

Beyond 180 EDTO regulatory approval would be required, they may not have that approval. It is not something the would need for other routes.
