How Often is 28L/10R at KFLL Actually Used

Sun Jul 24, 2022 4:47 pm

I watch a lot of the airliner YouTube flight vids, and noticed in a remarkably high number of KFLL vids, that 28L/10R seems to rarely ever be used, even for south - bound departures.

So is it actually even used all that often? What would have been point of all that work on it just to keep winding up still using the other runway?

Thnx

I logged into fr24.com and JBU2015 just took off from 10R to SDU. May be it is exclusively used for south departures to the Caribbean and everything else uses 10L/28R? I know there are some crane issues with the Port Everglades Cargo Terminal on departure from the 10's, but I don't know if that effects both runway's equally.

It is used a lot. The videos don't show it because there are no good spotting locations.

I mean those filmed from inside the planes themselves

During COVID I had to take NK to do my commuting TPA-FLL-SAL and back, and there was significant usage of 10R each time I was there, in fact all my flights landed and departed from 10R. Most of the flights were either NK or B6 using that runway.

I have since moved back to AA for my SAL and QRO trips from TPA via MIA, but imagine 10R/28L is in even more use now considering the rebound in air travel and return of cruises, lots more flight activities than when I was flying through.

That's false, Greenbelt park is one of the best spotting locations an airport has to offer.

I think I've used 10R/28L more than the north runway at this point. Landing downhill on 28L is interesting.

According to FlightAware, FLL has more than 700 takeoffs and landings a day, and this is during slow season. Probably close to a thousand daily movements during the winter. You need more than one runway to keep that amount of air traffic flowing smoothly. I’ve also seen 10R/28L used about as often as 10L/28R on Flightradar24. No reason to think that it isn’t used considering how busy the airport is.

I don't live in the area anymore, but pre-COVID after airliner operations commenced on the newly-expanded runway (September 2014), it saw just as a routine amount of use as the northern runway. Any lack of routine use on it now can most likely be chocked up to COVID.

Have a look at the airport on Google Maps/Earth. You can easily determine degrees of runway utilization based on the density of tire marks in the touch-down zones.

I flew out on Azul Brazilian Airlines a couple of weeks ago on a Monday morning and my flight departed using 10R instead of 10L which is the usual runway of choice for Azul. The A330 got off the ground with plenty of room to spare which was impressive considering that the plane was fully loaded with passengers, luggage and fuel.

Unless said runway is only used for take-off.
