Feasibility Of Ordering A New Passenger 737NG

Mon Jul 25, 2022 5:02 am

I saw a picture of a brand new 737-700 (future wedgetail), and was curious to know what the odds are for an airline to still order a 737NG in this date of time? Having working for WN many years now, I’ve seen our -700s do almost 10 legs in one day while our MAXs tend to do around 6. With the MAX7 certification taking longer and longer could it still be possible for one last batch of -700s if an airline like WN asked for it?

No, NG production is a wrap. The utilization isn't an aircraft thing, that's fully up to the airline. Considering that the MAX 8s are currently operating the longer Hawaii flights it doesn't surprise me that the amount of daily legs on average would be lower.

They are still producing the 737-800NG for the P8 Poseidon program as well, but as others pointed out, the feasibility of getting the supply chain for legacy items not used on the MAX would be prohibitive.

I'm sure you'd see a similar utilization trend with other North American airlines operating mixed NG and MAX fleets like UA, AA and WS... the efficiency of the MAX is more realized on longer sectors so that's where they are used, which lowers the number of flights operated per day.
