Atlas 777lr not retracting landing gear after takeoff LAX-GRU

Mon Jul 25, 2022 11:49 pm

This afternoon I was waking along Dockweiler beach (next to LAX) and saw a 777LR - completely white- take off and head out over Santa Monica Bay. Interestingly the aircraft did not retract its undercarriage for as long as I could see it- well to the south near Palos Verdes and at 8,000ft. I noted from FlightAware that this was heading to GRU and evidently it is continuing as normal.

I’m not a pilot but I’m fairly certain every flight I’ve been on they have retracted the undercarriage pretty soon after takeoff. Does anyone know if this is common practice to leave the gear down for an extended time after takeoff? Perhaps this was a ferry flight?

Not common, but there may be reasons. Inop Wheel well fire warning being one of them, hot brakes is another.

I just read about the hot brakes- turn time was 3 hours so suspect it wasn’t the issue…

Brakes can get hot on a long taxi out on a heavy. Nothing to do with turn time.

Especially on a freighter that's loaded to MTOW. They often have a MZFW greater than the PAX versions which does not help.

This could be due to the gear retraction braking system being inoperative, or a missing nose gear spin brake. In these cases, the gear needs to remain down for at least 2 minutes after takeoff to allow the wheels to stop spinning before retraction.

with the heat at LAX this week? A hot brakes scenario might not be that uncommon Especially where they might have had to taxi from to the takeoff point. Also? depending on what their Gross Weight might have been. 5-10 minutes with gear down after takeoff? Should alleviate any Hot Brake issues.
