Weight reductions in freighters

Do freight aircraft have floors in the cabin? A picture of an interior in this weeks flight suggests not as all the floor beams seem to be visible, if that is the case presumably is is a weight saving measure but are the gaps filled with something lighter (e.g. mesh) as a weight saving measure? Or does the cabin have to physically separated from the hold for fire suppression or pressurisation reasons?

Are you sure you're not confusing the floor beams with rollers to move the freight within the cabin.

Just for info, the C-5 was entirely pressurized. The A-model had something 30 fire suppression bottles on the cargo ceiling to flood a fire with FE1301, IIRC. Crew could transit the cargo deck freely in flight, pax, if escorted. The plane was built around the floor, trussed it could carry 40,000 pounds on every 36”. 240,000 boats were on and off in a few hours. 36 pallets, with a couple of Tunner loads, on/off in an hour. The rollers were on flip over panels, one side flat the other rollers. LMs would configure the floor while the lead reviewed the load plan

My carrier, the main deck floor is covered completely covered on all our freighters under the rollers and PDUs. Lower deck is different. On the B747-400F and B747-8F only two aisles are covered under the rollers and PDUs. On the B777F, some are only partially covered, others are completely covered. Have to be careful on the lower deck, slip off the roller track and hurt yourself.

As to weight reduction, my carrier removed almost all of the 88 inch pallet locks on the main deck and the coffee maker on the B747-400F.

I've seen this on the passenger 744 of a certain airline. They had no floor boards underneath the loading system in the aft cargo hold. So you had to watch your step as N757KW is saying. I vaguely recall having seen this in the forward hold of some passenger aircraft as well.

They do! But it is loaded in a thermos or other portable, insulated container.

For me, no coffee, well, that would be a “no-go” item :-)

That was the case on every 747 I’ve worked, for a few airlines. Narrow walkways across the trusses. It seemed to be an option in later types, since I’ve been on 777s with both total flooring and some with no flooring. Finally by the 787 it seems to have been made standard to have floors. Airbus on the other hand, all have floors in my experience

Instant coffee then and now. Few occasions when catering didn't have any we had to find some in the office. Crews gotta have their coffee.
