Post Brexit Flying for Airlines

Wed Jan 18, 2023 2:53 pm

Good day all,

Since the rules once again changed on 01/01/23, I was looking for some clarification on a few things;

A U.K. airline flying a G reg aircraft can no longer operate a flight from an EU airport, to any other Non-U.K. airport. For example, a G reg aircraft cannot operate from the EU to the US, correct? For example, Titan operating their NEOs POWT and XATW from the EU to destinations further afield.

Also, an EU airline or organisation can not wet lease a U.K. aircraft for flying, EASA state that for this to happen, “leasing is of a limited duration and is justified by exceptional or seasonal capacity needs or other operational difficulties as provided in relevant EU legislation” So short term leasing only. What “other operational difficulties” could this be? I remember Wizz U.K. leasing aircraft to Wizz Hungary for around 2 months a few summers ago, but after this rule had come into place, so how did they find a loophole for that?

And with Ryanair operating out of U.K. bases with a much heavier EU presence (EI, SP, 9H registered aircraft), than G reg, how are they navigating their way around this? With Ryanair operating far more than Ryanair U.K.

Usually, airlines can lease in aircraft from other countries and operate domestic or international routes that don't touch the registration country. N and EI registered aircraft, in particular, fly such flights all over the world. C registered aircraft operate for European airlines seasonally. The issue is who can fly them and on what certificate. Those G registered airplanes now need to be flown with people who have UK pilot certificates and UK pilots who don't have an EASA conversion can't fly non-G registered airplanes in Europe (at least not internationally, and otherwise dependent).
