Small antenna radome on some DAL 737-900s

Sun Jan 29, 2023 9:06 am

I noticed that several Delta 737-900s have a small radome/antenna on one side of the fuselage, just below the 2nd window aft of the mid-aft exit door. Not all of the -900s seem to have this odd modification. I've never seen an antenna radome installed on the side of the fuselage (why the side as opposed to the bottom?) before so I am curious if anyone can shed some light on it.

That looks like the old GoGo WiFi (ground-based) antennas that were on a few airlines. They would be on both sides of the aircraft somewhere between the trailing edge of the wing and aft exits below the window line. If I recall correctly, having it on that location would make reception better should the ground-based signals be off to the side of the aircraft, and to help avoid outages in turns. I recall AA installing those on aircraft years ago before going to ViaSat. Perhaps these aircraft in DL's fleet haven't been upgraded to satellite based WiFi yet?

All the Delta 737s with WiFi have satellite based systems now. The old ground based system antennas on the fuselage sides have been removed. Some planes are more noticeable but all the planes that had it removed have patches on the fuselage where the antennas used to be.

Does anyone know what frquency band these ground based wifi systems used? Im curious as the rf spectrum is pretty tight.

The glossy brochure on the Gogo website indicated 850 Ghz

"Gogo is the only connectivity provider with
the ability to leverage both licensed and
unlicensed frequencies – our proprietary
850 GHz plus 2.4 GHz. It’s an exclusive
benefit to our networks and gives our
customers a constantly “clean signal” that
delivers unmatched network performance,
reliability and security. "

looked it up on the FCC database,
Frequency Range Power Output Tolerance Emission Designator Rule Parts Line Entry
894.75 MHz 10.069 Watts 4.8000000000Hz 1M26F9W 22G 1

Looks like somebody in Gogo's marketing department made a typo!
