Average Turnaround Time?

Thu Sep 28, 2000 10:57 pm

Folks,

Does anyone know what is the average turn-around time for a jet airliner from the time it arrives at the gate to the time the plane is pushed back from the gate in preparation for takeoff?

I do know that WN strives for a 15-minute turnaround time (that's why they've always used 737's) and VS usually takes about 180 minutes to turn around a 747-400 on their international flights.

It's going to be real fun to see if an A3XX-100 can be turned around in 180 minutes.

I think that a 30-45 minute turnaround time is about the average. Times seem to have decreased over the years as competition has increased. An airplane that isn't flying can't make any money for you.

The fastest turnaround time I ever had with an aircraft was a Reeve 727 flight that was running a couple of hours late. It was an ANC-CDB-ADK-CDB-ANC routing. Anyway we made up about a half hour when we first saw it at CDB and then it made up another half hour at ADK. Anyway when it got to CDB on the return leg we where able to turn it around with a 7 minute block-in block-out time. We did this with a five man crew too. This quick turn was mainly possible because the entire onload was able to fit in one topside igloo.

At United, our minimum groundtime for a 737 is 30 minutes. For a 757 it is 45 minutes. Work much faster than that with a full load on both the inbound and outbound, and you start to see injuries.
