Geared Turbofan

Mon Oct 02, 2000 2:03 pm

PW has been experimenting with a geared tubofan and I was wondering what the benefits would be. I am sure they would be quieter due to the slower fan speed. I think it would also reduce the number of turbine stages. I am guessing it will be more efficient. Will this allow them to introduce radical but more efficient fan blade angles. I am not too sure how they will have a power advantage over conventional turbofans. Your thoughts would be great.

The PW website explains it very well.

My fault. I haven't looked on the PW site in a while. It seems like they did have a better description of it a while back.

RE: Geared Turbofan-Fuel Efficiency

Fri Oct 06, 2000 8:06 pm

The gearing will allow different stages of the engine to operate a their more optimum speed. Without gearing the compressor, the fan, etc all run at the same speed, which limits efficiency. PW originally proposed the PW8000 with a bypass ratio that was 12 to 1 too, which is better than the typical 7 or 8 to 1 of today.

The engine was also to include the parts saving technology that has been incorporated into the PW6000. With the drastically reduced parts and the geared fan, the engine would be more fuel efficient and cost much less to maintain. At the time it was predicted than an A320 with PW8000s could fly across the atlantic.

I have a series of articles that the Hartford Courant put out in 1998 when the PW8000 was launched. I'll see if I can find them, they provide a very detailed explanation.
