App Vs Autoland

Fri Oct 06, 2000 6:37 am

hello all how are you doing ??

hope everything is well...

here's a rather silly question but i really would like to see what you think about it

what is the difference between the function of the app knob located in the a\p and the autoland (all the types cat I,II,II) and where is the autoload device is located...

best of regards

Not sure what you're asking in the above, but I'll take a guess.

APP = Approach mode for flight director. Means flight director will provide guidance information based upon flying the selected approach (lots of variations available).

AutoLand = Autopilot will not only fly the approach (following flight director guidance), but will also automatically land the aircraft using predefined flight parameters. Simply put, the autopilot will retard throttles and flare for landing while continuing to track course (hopefully runway centerline) and glideslope. Actually very complex procedure and much too difficult to explain in this medium (one needs lots of visual aids).

Difference between the two? If autopilot is on with approach mode selected, it will fly course/glideslope without regard for ground contact. Ouch!   Autoland accounts for rate of closure to ground and in 757 and 767 does rather nice flare and touchdown.
