First Generation DC-8 Still Going Strong

Thu Oct 12, 2000 12:27 am

Recently while looking at DC-8 pics I came across this one that was taken in August of this year:

I think it's wonderful that in this day and age we still see fully operational first-generation DC-8's. It did get me thinking, though, about how operators of these older DC-8's get all the necessary parts when it comes time for major overhauls, seeing as the planes have been out of production for almost 30 years.

By the way, does anyone know if production of the Series 50 plane ended when the "stretch" versions came out in 1966? Or were aircraft such as this one above still produced right up to the closing of the DC-8 production line in May of 1972?

Thanks
May the wind be always at your back . . . except during takeoff & landing.

Out of 556 DC8's the first series 60 was a -61, line# 262 and the last series 50 was a -54JT, line# 410.

MK Airlines (who own the DC8 pictured) is based in the village of Hartfield, East Sussex, England (where Winnie the Pooh had his adventures- if you remember the children's stories).

Based in a large country house, the location is about 18 miles from Gatwick and it comes as a bit of a shock when you drive up the long winding drive, in a typical English setting, to come upon a DC8 rudder or a couple of P+W engines outside the stores.

No doubt since I last visited a couple of years ago, they have 747 parts also as they now operate a couple of these.
