Will There Ever Be A 777F?

Does boeing have any plans to build a freighter version of any of the popular 777 models? Would they be too expensive?

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I seem to remember reading something about United considering a cargo version of the 777 to replace their DC-10F fleet. May just be long, long, long range plans.

Has Boeing even put out any design considerations for a 777 freighter?

The 777 will make a nice freighter, thats for sure. I think we´ll see this plane in a not too distant future. I remember I read something about that a few months ago but can´t remember where.

Hello,

The 777F is a project, and not just a simple proposal. But we won't see this aircraft flying in the next years for line capacity reasons mainly (busy 777 line and not really busy 747-400 line).

I think 777F should replace the great frighter MD-11, because Boeing stopped it. 777 is more efficient than MD-11.

We also have to think about the event that no one wants to see happen. The 747 cannot go on forever, even with the newer models. Eventually the giant willl have to retire and twin jets like the 777 and A330 will have to fill in the freighter spots, especially with the DC-10/MD-11 fleets retiring.

After pondering these posts, I wonder.... The 747s main deck was designed for two standard sized pallets side by side, and the 777 is narrower than the 747 by 9 in. 777 19ft 3in--747 20ft 0in. Anyway, so would these pallets fit, or would new pallets need to be made to get the most efficiency? Obviously the A330 could not fit these pallets, being 29 inches narrower than the 777.

UA is getting out of the dedicated frieghter business on Christmas Eve this year, or so I have been told.

Don't think anyone should hold their breath for a 777F. The situation is that forwarders, the people who consolidate freight, want full height full contour capacity freighters for their long haul capacity. Boeing, responding to market conditions, is in the process of developing a larger capacity 747F with additional positions for more full-height containers/pallets. The shortcoming of a 777F is the fact that it will not be able to load full height rectangular contour pallets on main deck like 747F. It would only be able to load containers and pallets with a slightly higher contour height than DC-10/MD-11. Those aircraft can load standard M base pallets but they are contoured with a 74-84IN height limit on one side. However the advantages of a 777F are self-evident. A -200 size freighter would probably be able to load 2 more positions on main-deck, and have the same lower hold capacity as an MD-11, while offering much greater range with payload. A 777-200LR freighter with its increased MTOW would probably increase the range with payload by 55% over an MD-11! But in the final analysis it all falls back to market conditions. If there is a market, Boeing will build it. So if the Cargo airlines are on board and the climate is conducive, we will see it happen. Otherwise it is just another enthusiasts dream.

us forwarders always love to make square main deck pallets, but even the 747f does not allow us to do so (unless you are talking about the limited number of 96' height square pallets that are loaded below the upper deck) - all others also have to be contoured at 96' on upto 118' on opposites

give boeing another 2-3 years and the 777f will beout there (i for one would welcome it, for exactly the reasons that you state: payload, payload and more payload)

True enough about the main-deck contour for B747F aft of the hump. But I was referring to the fact that you can not load 96H rectangular contour pallets or containers side-by-side on DC-10/MD-11, or a future 777F. And of course AMD containers are not loadable on those aircraft wich use the AMJ containers for side-by-side loading. Furthermore as you know, the 747F has fantastic capabilities like being able to load 8X8 sea containers up to 40feet long, and outsized cargo capability that the DC/MD ships can't match. On the other hand the DC-10F/MD11F are great for the simple package freighter application because of their very economical ton/mile costs of operation and their range with payload. it seems to me A 777F would improve significantly on those aspects if it were built.

United was pressuring Boeing to get to work on a 777 Freighter over the Summer. United wanted to replace the DC-10-30Fs as they will be retiring the last of the passenger "Diesel 10s" shortly.

However, as far as I can tell Boeing wasn't listening. I believe this played no small part in United's decision to rely on belly space for cargo for the foreseeable future.
