Bulge On B744s

Sun Dec 03, 2000 12:56 am

i notice there is a small bulge protruding on the top of B744s' fuselage. It occurs around at the 3/4 part of the fuselage. At first, I thought they are only unique to SQ B744s but other B744s also have the same feature. What is it for?

I notice that other variants of B747s (eg. 741, 742, 743) do not have this feature.

This is a sattelite antenna, used for the telephones and other inflight entertainment systems(internet)!
The older 747 versions haven´t got this antenna caus´they don´t have sattelite telephones, but on some it was installed later on, there you can see the antenna too!

Hope to helped you!

Sincerly, Benjamin!

so it's a standard feature for all B744s? how come other long-haul wide-bodies like A330/A340 and B777 don't seem to have the same thing?

by the way thanks for helping Benjamin!

There are two types of Satcom Antenna, the "lump" & the high gain side antenna. With the side antenna ther is an aerial either side of the fuselage.
