I think its the Rolls-Royce engines built for the 777. Combined, they put out more thrust than a Saturn 5 rocket. Anyone know the engine's designation?
On a side note, I wonder if the A380's engines will be more powerful, but there will be 4 of them compared to 2 on the 777.
The thrust on a first stage Saturn V is 6,000,000, pounds. Good Try. Even the puny Atlas, which put Glenn, Carpenter, Schirra, and Cooper into orbit, puts out about 370,000 lbs. thrust.
It was on the discovery channel's special on the B777, they stated that the combined thrust at maximum was greater than the first rocket to take humans to the moon. I believe that was the Saturn 5, I'll check the books. And if anyone taped that show would you kindly check for me?
you talking about the first Mercury mission freedom 7 that send Alan B. Shepard, Jr in space for 15 mins
it was a redstone rocket am sure the 777 engines have give about the same thurst.
I checked and the show was talking about the first rockets into space, not neccessarily to the moon. I appologize for my error. Think, I was only wrong by about 365,000 Km. That an astrological near-miss!
It very well could have been the rocket that took them to the moon. That rocket was not the Saturn V. The Saturn V got them off the ground. Another actually took them to the moon.
