757SF Lower Deck

Wed Jan 31, 2001 8:31 pm

I read the Boeing press release on the new 757SF's being built for DHL. I was very surprised to see that the lower deck has been converted to carry DYH containers. I have an extensive background in air cargo and I have never seen such a container. I am wondering if it's new? If it's not then I'd like to know what carriers use it, and for what aircraft. I can decipher a few things about the DYH container from the ID

D: container, rectagular or winged contour
Y: base dimensions 61.5 X 88in
H: Lower deck height 45 or 46 inches

This container would definitely need a larger door than the current dims. I am guessing at least 47in high X 97in wide, making it 40% larger than the A320 series. The containers themselves are nearly 50% larger than the AKH's for the A320. My hope is that someone could give me more specific information on the lower deck system of the 757SF.

I have been hoping for real ULD capability on the 757 for a long time and it looks like Boeing may have done it in a great way for 757! Another cargo plus for Boeing!

Boeing must be able to do something right if they can't seem to design/sell a megaliner.
