Why So Many 6000' Runways In Canada?

Mon Feb 05, 2001 9:40 am

While searching diffrent airports at I noticed lots of smaller, regional airports have 6000 foot runways. Is there any reason for this particular lentgh or is it just a conicedence?

I beleive it has something to do with the Cold War days. In the case of Nuclear holocaust, NATO wanted places for the A/C to land. Also Eisenhaur (SP?) made a rule that 1 out of evey 5 miles of an interstate is straight so in time of war A/C could land.

6000 feet is also a very good standard length to accept a large variety of aircraft. Even newer airports have 6000 foot runways and airports that have newly extended runways opt for this length. I also agree with Top Gun in that it probably had something to do with jets during the cold war being able to land and t/o there.

I think you've mistaken Canada with the US. We don't have interstates (or states) and we never elected Eisenhower because he was a president of the US. Not of Canada.
