Purpose Of "daisy Petal"

This maybe a basic question but I see on photos of very old turbojet-powered 707 and DC-8 what is called a "daisy petal" exhaust on engines.
What is the purpose of this device, because all of the turbofan-powered jetliners don't have these kind of exhaust ?

They were a form of early noise supression to help mix the cold slower moving ambient air with the hot high speed jet exhaust.
