is 121.5 the universal comm channel for emergencies? i know it is in the USA

Yes. Additionally, 243.0 MHz, the first harmonic of 121.5 MHz.

Yes it is and pilots and ATC are monitoring it.

121.5 is the emergency frequency for civilian traffic while military are using 243 MHz.
Some military, like the US Navy P3s are monitoring both frequencies.
The sky has no limit...

So, should I have a scanner, and I tune it in on 121.5, the only thing I will hear (if there's someting to listen to of course...) will be aircraft with some kind of emergency?

Let's hope that I won't hear too much chatter on this frequency..Now, the only thing that I still have to do, is buy a scanner...

In the UK we can do practice emergencies and do practice pans on that frequency, pretty fun stuff!

I think most of what you'll here on those frequencies are people testing their ELTs. You'll have to be pretty close to and airport though.

Some ELTs being installed these days also transmit on 403 MHz. They transmit serial data to a satellite including the last aircraft position from the FMS/GPS if it's connected.

Another thing you'll hear might be ATC trying to get in contact with an aircraft. It happens sometimes that you lose contact (e.g. fly out of the range of the previous controller without getting a new frequency) and can't find an appropriate new one on the charts. 121.5 might be of good help. Some ATCOs are aware that most flights monitor 121.5 and try to establish a connection like this, or you may ask some collegues for the correct freq.
