The GE-UDF Engine

Yes it is quite an old project between Boeing and GE that was tested on the 727.

What was its concept?
Wasn’t it supposed to be mounted on the later terminated 7J7 project?

Basically the concept was a high bypass unducted fan that was more fuel efficient and quieter than comparable turbofans. It was a pretty complex machine, the fan blades were mounted on separate spools that counter-rotated. The turbines were integrated into the hub of the fans and the two counter-rotating turbines intermeshed, so there were no stators. Does anyone know of a website with good information about this engine? Here's some more info though:

McDonnel Douglas also put one on an MD-80, there are pics in this database. I have seen the actual engine, it's in the Paul Garber museum near Andrew's AFB.

The problems were that, while it was much more fuel efficient, the cost of fuel dropped sharply. It was not worth it's expense. Also, in spite of the claims that it was really quiet, anyone (the tour guide to the museum) who had heard it run say it was unbearably loud, and that it came nowhere near meeting stage three requirements in their opinion.

Good idea, bad timing.

I would also think that it would be very vulnerable to FOD.

There is another MD-80 UDF engine in the Pratt & Whitney museum in Hartford, Ct.
This plane is built to withstand anything... except a bad pilot.

Many years ago I attended a Line Maintenance class at a major engine OEM that was also attended by a mechanic on this project. He mentioned that anti-icing of the UDF blades was dependent on the heat from the turbine exhaust. During cold weather testing it was found that the blade tips would accumulate enough ice to set up an unacceptable amount of vibration.

I know, it's just shop talk, but I find it believable.
