Fuselage Warping And Stress?

Tue Jan 01, 2002 5:43 am

Obviously a stretched plane will experience "more gravity" that the original, at what point is a plane too long?

Similarly, on a previous version of NASA's HCST, they had a canard up front only because the lengthy fuselage would experence bending/warping when changing pitch, is it effective enough to install canards on future super-stretched versions?

Aside from airport and FAA restrictions, can a 500-foot plane be built to fly?

For those that have flown in the rear of a stretched DC-8 can look up the aisle and watch the fuselage twist a bit. Interesting sight indeed.

So I wonder what happens in the A340-600 in this situation then!! Wow!

You can even watch this happen sitting in the back of a 763!

But is there a limit to this? Hindenberg flew and it was over 800ft long, did it bend at all?
