Could someone please help me with some information regarding the fuel tank arrangement on the B747-400 ERF (Freighter)
I am aware that standard B747-400 F’s do not have a tail tank like that on the 400 Pax’s versions. I was wondering if the 400ERF has the tail tank? Also does it have the AUX tanks fitted as well? Or is it configured with just centre, wings and reserve tanks only like that on the standard 400 F’s.

Hi Will,
The tail tank on the 747-400 are optional tanks. The operator asks Boeing to fit it in or not when the plane is being build.
Since fuel on the tail is a nightmare for every loadmaster, freighter operators tend to keep their fleet without the tail tank!
By the way, all LHCAG MD-11 fleet has a tail tank!!! Mind you, having a huge CF6-80 and 10 tonnes of fuel on the tail isn't a good idea!!!

are you sure about those 10tons. I thought md11 tail tank can contain about 6tons of fuel (depending density)

I'm sorry about the information. I had the 747-400 in mind when I wrote about the 10 tonnes... The MD-11 can carry up to 6 tonnes on the tail tank
