Will AA Recall Any AMT's In The Future?
Thought I'd ask any A&P's who work for AA what the latest rumors are for maintenance. Any sign of recalls happening in the future?

As of right now the word is none in the near term. There was a rumor late last year that AA was going to man FLL. However nothing has come of that as of yet. The only rumor floating around right now is that they are looking at closing some class 2's.
I know this is not the most encouraging news in the world and I'm sorry about that. Hang in there and hopefully things will get better soon.

Looks like I shouldn't even bother searching for my first A&P job next month when I graduate.

Right now times are tight as far as A&P jobs are concerned. The funny thing is the current "glut" of A&P's is artificial. I personally know more than one AMT who has turned his back on the aviation industry. Once the industry starts picking up speed it will find they are short of qualified A&P's. So I guess if you decide to stick around eventually you will be able to get the job you want.
My advice to you is to stay in school and get a four year degree. It can't hurt and it will give you more options in the future. If staying in school is not an option you can always try an FBO or a third party maintenance outfit. The competition will be tight but you might get lucky.

Quite cyclical, this industry is. There was, and still is, a shortage of A&P's of sorts...but the upheaval in the industry has changed how and why. Before 9-11, market forces and the shortage therein were just about starting to tip the balance in favor of AMT's ( albeit with much vitriol ) but obviously things have changed. The upheaval led to an attempted and still present move to reset the entire paradigm. From this, the educated conspiracy theorist in me seems to suggest that the attempt to remedy this artificial shortage ( due to the falling compensation/security ) will be more along the lines of cheapening the profession and lowering standards...it's all about bucks kids: "Nobody will take these jobs...." Well, nobody qualified will take these jobs at what's being offered...so they just lower the requirements. The industry lobbyists may well have begun to start burning the midnight oil.

Unfortunately, you guys get a shorter end of the stick than us pilots. No matter what, they always need two of us per flight but they seem to think that having fewer mechanics is always a good way to save money. I often wonder how much longer it will be before we start seeing safety greatly affected by the penny pinchers.
UAL, Check into the regionals. The pay isn't as good, but the experience is there and with their rapid expansion many are hiring. Trans States has a maintinance base here at STL and we share ramp space with them. I've seen a lot of new faces around here lately and they are buying up RJs as fast as Embraer can build them.

Thanks for the advice guys. I'm trying to avoid 3rd party outfits since most airlines won't look at them as providing useful experience, or so I have been told. I've sent resumes to just about all the regionals, but have only had one interview so far.

Just a "heads up"; Seems the thing is beginning to turn.
There's an airline in LAS that's going to be hiring "young" motivated people to train from scratch to build the company like they used to do in the 50's and 60's. At least that's the plan.
Seems there aren't too many out there that "know" the MD80 and are also willing to start for less than $20/hr so the plan is to start from scratch and do the training in-house with pay as an incentive to get good at the job.
There's also a start-up getting ready to go in PHX/CHD that'll be looking for semi-retired MD80 people very soon.
We'll see won't we...

I won't not really say that. I started applying a few months before graduating. I was called and interview just a month before graduation, and had a job waiting for me.

That used to be the policy at DL, but is no longer the case. We have several people from Timco, BFG, FBO's and others. Get some Avionics experience and an FCC license if you can. A degree is not a bad idea if you don't have one.

Cessna is opening the largest general aviation maintanence facility in the world in Wichita, KS this fall. They are looking to hire A&P mechs.

C8 is Chicago Express...... They have a fleet of around 17-20 mostly former American Eagle Saab 340B's.

Yes, I remember you. We did do that charter together. How did your trip to XNA go? I remember hearing something about it from Brad.
Our Mx folks and contractors keep the Saabs running well (usually 99% monthly completion factor) but I'm sure it takes a lot of effort. The climate control system and avionics seem to act up in the summer and the winter brings anti-icing issues (brittle boots). You'll probably know more than I do in short order. Let me know when you get settled in, I'd love to come check out the Mx operation at MDW.

Are the Saabs MX hogs?....Only if you don't keep up on the Preventive Maintenance program. I'n my 8 years working the SF340 I've never seen any major issues...and as for brittle boots..? ...thats a new one on me.

Joe, the XNA trip was great. Got F class both ways and got fed rather nicely. (flying is dining experience before a mode of transportation 
)
I had all of 15 min for a layover. The flight home had fewer than one dozen pax. I might just have to sneak another one in Saturday...

Well, that ended fast. I've been laid off before I even started. "Due to restructuring, everything is being put on hold, yadda yadda." Back to square one. I got the call yesterday.
