Beech 1900d - Vertical Surfaces
Why does this type seem to have so many extra vertical surfaces; two on elevators and two under tail.

I suppose Beech just wanted to further improve performance and stability characteristics - particularly the latter - over the previous 1900 variants. The 1900D is certainly "add-on city," complete with winglets, ventral fins, tailets, etc...

The Strakes on the 1900D are to add to the aircrafts stabilty during an engine out situation. The early 1900's required a major deflection of the rudder during engine out operations.
The winglets were added after Beech had sucess with them on the King Air. I think they might have been offered for the 1900C also.

I have never seen a 1900C with winglets. The only King Air I can think of with factory winglets is the 350 which was developed long after the 1900 series.
Truth be told Beech rode out the basic King Air design with successively larger cabins and more powerful moters as long as they posibily could. Those extra surfaces are to counter some of the negative effects and to widen the operating envelope of the aircraft.

I believe that L-188 is correct. Beech chose to mod the existing King Air tail, rather than designing a new tail.

True enough. The 1900D has more powerful engines, with a longer fuselage. Can't have done much for the stability situation.
Personally, I think they took one of the most attractive aircraft around (King Air B200) and made it into just about the ugliest thing out there. Have to admire that kind of design ability.

The primary function of the design engineer is to make things difficult for the manufacturer and impossible for the AME.

The whole design is like a sledgehammer, ugly, but very effective when used properly. The tailets (yes, that is the name raytheon uses) are used to increase yaw stability and lower Vmc. They also remove operation restrictions when the yaw damp is defered (a much larger problem for the King 350 I believe)

I forget who it was that said it, but you can tell a lot about what problems they had with the design by what aerodynamic features they chose to put on the outside 
For example, Beech added winglets to the design, which ment that they where trying to lengthen the wing without actually doing that or increasing the footprint. They added power to the engines, so they added those two fillets on the bottom of the aft cabin, which increases the surface area to counteract that, a 1900C only has a single much smaller one.

the ones that stick out of the fuselage are the worst! i can't even remember how many of those damn things i've walked into! the problem arises when you're working an B1900 and there is nothing else around you to make noise. in those cases you don't usually wear hearing protection. someone calls you from across the ramp, you turn and BAM!!

Don't feel you are the only one Cancidas.
Last night I was helping push a Merlin off a dead barless tug and put my head in the prop.
For a second I though I had added a second scar to the one I had put in my head a couple years ago by bouncing it off a blade nav antenna on the bottom of a metro.
Didn't though, but it did smart.

you're lucky it was just a scar. i had my jaw broken by a prop on a jetstream 41. the pilot apparently didn't know i was pulling the chocks even though my buddy was up front telling him not to spool.

A lot of the extra tail surfaces (namely the fuse mounted one) have to do with T tail deep stall recovery.

I remember reading somewhere that the ones on the fuselage below the tail of the 707 where added afterwards, as a result of dutch roll problems that had resulted in a crash.
If I remember correctly, Boeing retrofitted these at their cost to all current types.
