Aircraft Jacks

Wed Sep 08, 2004 2:31 pm

There's a thread going on right now talking about 747's jacked up...
Who designs those jacks? Are the aircraft manufacturers the ones that design them, or is it other various contractors designing them to the manufacturer's specs?
Or is it just inflated rubber "mattresses" where one fits all?
Travel? Why would i travel if I can watch it on TV?

I don't' know about the 747 specifically, but typically jacks and other ground support equipment are provided by companies such as It was explained once to me that by providing the specs for aircraft specific equipment to various GSE companies, the aircraft manufacturer could help lower the prices by providing competition.

The jacks are made by different manufacturers or vendors, there is a Boeing equipment or tooling list. These books have specifications and sometimes even engineering drawings on how to manufacture them, but that doesn't mean anyone can build this tooling, you have to be an approved manufacturer.
Those mattresses you referred to are usually only used for aircraft recovery if there is an unusual situation i.e. stuck in the mud
If it's not broken, don't fix it !
