Took my first ride on a Dash 8 yesterday. Is it normal for the doors on the side of the MLG strut to have a great deal of "play" in them when the gear is extended? They were flapping around pretty badly as if the attachment fittings were worn. Is this normal for these aircraft?
A little... but not a lot. During the C-Checks we have done on Dash-8's almost all of the aircraft have required replacement of the MLG gear door linkage due to wear. It's a big door and takes quite a beating out there.
"It's not the size of the dog in the fight, but the size of the fight in the dog"
Originally those fwd doors on the left side of the gear, were hydraulic, like the aft doors are. But this design created a lot of problems and (not sure when) they were redesigned as the mechanical "follow me" doors they are now. Which should give plenty of reason for the play and awkwardness that they have now.
The Dash-8-100's that I used to work on still have hydraulically actuated landing gear doors. I'm not aware of any mod to change them. They did move a lot in the breeze, and we often changed the attaching hardware.
The primary function of the design engineer is to make things difficult for the manufacturer and impossible for the AME.
I've worked on both, and the later type, with the linkage connected to the drag strut, do end up having more play after a while.
I prefer the later type though because the actuators on the older ones eventualy end up leaking. Then you get to climb up there and play with skydrol...
