Do Pilots Need To Be Internationally Certified?

Tue Mar 01, 2005 9:37 am

Do pilots who fly from the U.S. to other countries need any sort of international certification by the FAA?

Well, when you get your pilot certificate in the mail it says that ICAO requires second in command to hold the applicable type rating. As far as I know, Canada and Mexico don't count, and probably not the Caribbean or anything like that. So, not necessarily the FAA, but ICAO does require some type of certification when a SIC is required.

No, not generally the pilots need special certification, except that which is required by the country of registration or airline certification (and the required flight crew visas), but specific foreign air carriers need to be certified in accordande with 14CFR129...for flying INTO the United States.
This mostly concerns flight operations, aircraft engineering (maintenance) and most importantly now, these carriers need to have an approved security program in place, and a method by which they can assure the relevant FAA/DOT/TSA authorities that the program in place will be strictly kept to, on a regular basis.
Several other items are involved as well, but this will give you a general idea of the basic requirements.

If you are flying a US registered aircraft, other than a international radio operators permit, there is nothing really particular to every case.
