ATL Runway Configuration

Just one quick question. What is the prevailing runway configuration at Atlanta? Is it landing and departing East, or West?

The reason I ask is, I'll be arriving there for the first time next month, and I want to get a window seat on the side of the airplane that will most probably face the airport during final approach. I'll be arriving from the South, which means I can expect to land on 9R/27L, but I don't know which direction is more likely. I really like watching another aircraft on a simultaneous approach.

Prevailing winds are typically from the west... so landing west. The vast majority of times I've operated there, I've landed to the west.

It's a tossup though...

The airport operates in West config when ever possible. The feeding approaches for a west bound operation are more efficent and allow for more operations per hour.

What difference does it make? That airport is so busy, he will get an eyeful reguardless of which side he gets. Sitting jump seat going into there is an eyeful!!

Just like our weather---wait a little bit and it will change. I'd have to agree the flow to the west is most popular.

Depends, out of the 20+ times I've flown through ATL, at least 1/2 landed from the east...
Some see lines, others see between the lines.

68% of the time the airport is configured landing towards the west.

It really does not matter where you're setting because most of the times you'll get a view of one or another part of the airport. If you're coming from Mexico (I am assuming because of your username) then you are correct, you will be landing on 9R/27L. You will then taxi out to concourse E.

When landing on 9R, You will roll out pretty much the whole lenght of the runway, coming up maybe with 1000ft of the end of the runway. This is pretty much parallel with where concourse E is, so I'd recommend for you to be sitting on the left side of the aircraft to get a good "terminal/airport view."

When landing on 27L, you roll out to the other end and will have to taxi back to Echo, so its a toss up if you want right or left side of the aircraft as you will see the terminal from either end, just from the right side when you're landing and on the left side when you taxi back.

So...I'd recommend for you to sit on the left side of the aircraft as it is the side that will guarantee you a view of the terminals whether you land on 9R/27L.  Silly

You can expect but it may not happen. ATC at ATL never seems to make much sense and I have on more than one occaision landed on the northern runways when arriving from Florida and the souther runways when arriving from the NE or NW.

If you are coming from the south then the left side of the plane would be a good side to be on if you are landing to the West as you could see the field while still in the air. If you land on the northern runways so much the better as you will get a good view of DL TechOps.

Arrivals into KATL can be interesting and fun. Last year on a DL Mad Dog from Albany (ALB) we did our crosswind east of the airport still at considerable altitude then did our downwind south of the airport at a considerable rate of descent, then a high angle bank turn to the right to base and quickly to a very short final to 9R. Visual conditions, of course. I asked the pilots about our approach, and they called the slam dunk approach. I wish I could have watched the VSI and artificial horizon during that approach!
