The Annoying Whining Sound On A 717

Sun Sep 17, 2006 2:51 pm

Does anybody know what the aforementioned sound is on a 717. IIRC it starts before the engines are lit and continues throughout the flight. I've noticed it on four seperate YX flights.

A whining sound may be a pump of some kind. Where were you sitting?

The electric Aux Hydraulic Pump. A very loud annoying sound indeed. If you think it sounds bad in the cabin, you should stand next to it in the right wheel well. It provides hydraulic pressure while the engine driven pumps are off and is a back up in case one should fail in flight. It drives the right system directly and provides pressure for the left through a transfer pump.

Nah, it's definately the lumps (not pumps) in the front L/H and R/H seats. Better yet, listen to them whine when "them noisey round things" go silent.

Must be the electric hydraulic pump but they do not leave it on thoughout the flight. It is only on during takeoff and landing.
Maybe it's the passengers when they realize there are no cookies on their YX flight.

Then it must be the subsequent engine noise that mimics this.

Come to think of it, I believe it does sound like it's coming from the right side.

Is this something that appears on all aircraft in the DC-Series? I thought I read somewhere that there was a similar noise on the DC-9 as well.

Sounds like a Hydraulic Pump of some kind.Is it that loud. There should be mufflers installed to supress the sound.
