Things That Make Me Go Hýmm....on A320 No:1

Happy new year everybody  Smile

I use the word "Hýmm..." in two different ways.Hýmm with your head sideways in an negative way and Hýmm with a smile in your face in a positive way.I will start writing both negative and positive "Hýmms" from A320 family as my experience starts building up.So I can hear comments from the more experienced 320pilots like (pihero, zeke)and also we all can share your thoughts.

The "hýmm number 1" is something I am unhappy on the family. As the winter kicks in it gets cold on the ground and colder in the air.And as the flight at high altitudes exceeds 2 hours I really feel cold in this airplane.Especially from my legs and feet.Generally its the air coming from the equipment cooling system. And the airplane' skin itself that gets cold.I sometimes use blankets to cover my knees from the cold-which makes me look paralised on a wheelchair-

Unfortunate to say that I had never had this on the...well 737.Any thoughts?

I'd swear that ours had foot warmers but I don't remember how or where you turn them on.

I was always pretty cozy in the 'bus.

If you open up FCOM 1 on page 1.25.10 page 16 and it says "LEFT INTENTIONALLY BLANK", that is the problem.

If it says "FOOT WARMERS" that is the solution.

Yes the foot warmers...There is a switch right side of the PFD(for the copilot side) for the foot warmers and I strongly doubt that our airplanes have the system activated since even with the ON position it doesnt even warm itself let go the feet .

Your FCOM will be the best guide to see if the mod has been included in your fleet, or removed.

If it appears to be installed with the FCOM reference, have a chat with your maintenance people on a turn around, if it is not working and they can confirm it it is unserviceable it is worthhaving it investigating just in case some wires have been chaffed. That may prevent a fire.

Oh dear. Didn't spring for the option package? Tsk tsk  Wink

I would recommend a good pair of labswool slippers. Just remember to change into shoes before saying goodbye to the pax. Big grin

Or chaff the wires a bit more... and bring some marshmallows and a toasting fork.

I 've checked that the FCOM's indicate that the foot warmers actually installed on the aircraft but still I am pretty sure that it doesn't help any.Tonight I 'll specially ask the technicians if they know anything about the system deactivated or not.

Thats the best advice   With many MSN numbers fitted into the same binder and many many pages of paperwork on clipboard, we sure will not run out of papers to burn ...

All 320s man,I am anxiously waiting for the brand new ones to arrive, hope the problem is only with the old msn numbers.

Hýmm..

Smile First I thought when I saw this thread was "Turkish encoding".

Turkish has the letter "i" without a dot whose sound would quite well match the implicit vowel that the English "Hmmm" has. But in Western encoding this letter doesn't exist and becomes "ý". Hence the (possible) confusion!

What I was referring to was if during Mx the Insulation Blankets were moved from that location hence the added cooling.

You see, Wing? It's not as bad as you think. You don't have missing heat, you have added cooling.  Smile

The cold air from the avionics cooling is quite annonying, so we turn up the cockpit temp quite a bit when it's dark outside. The cabin crew will then come in, find that it's much warmer than the cabin, then stay and chat.

Or you can wear an extra pair of socks. But that would mean you need to buy a bigger pair of shoes, which is not economically viable.

In any case, we have no foot warmers. Some of our aircraft still have the switch installed, but for psychological purposes only.

So a switch that probably costs $1000 by itself is just there as a placebo?

Now that's useful  Yeah sure

Quoting David L (Reply 13):

Actually, he does have missing heat. Heat is energy, cold is not. Therefore, to create coldness, you need to remove heat.

Well, if WN pilots can wear funny ties, why not funny shoes? (Ok, OK they have the 737 and we're talking A320 - maybe funny ties in an A320 are not such a good idea)

Well Wing, if you ever come to work for HP/US, I'll get you these

Ahaa,I am sorry Slamclick, now this is a better idea,it not only warms the moment ,may lead to warmer moments later in the layover  optimist

I assume everyone knows the foot warmer is just a warmed metal plate on the floor before the rudder pedals? i.e. if you have your feet on the rudder pedals no heat for you. I didn't know this till the other night, however that said I only have 25 hours on it, so...

I was on office duty for the last week,so there was no flights for me a while.Today while at cruise these quotes came to my mind,I placed my feet to the rudder pedals on cruise(which is not very practical in my opinion) but there was no use.I touched the pedal with my hand and it was cold. Now I am confused a little.Where is it written exactly that the pedals only heated and we have to keep the feet on them all the flight? Thanks for the help.

The Foot warmer plates are placed on the Floor behind the Rudder pedals & not on The Rudder pedals.

Yes I understand that but what I mean is ,I can't even feel the heat with my bare hands let alone to feel with my shoes on.Thats why its the first thing that made me go...HMMM on the A320 cockpit.
