Turbine Cooling Tech Questions

Was some turbine cooling technology patented? For example GE's J-93 first turbine stage featured hollow with holes drilled in the rear of the blades, and GE-used this in later designs.

BTW: While not turbine cooling related, I felt like asking anyway-- was variable stators ever patented?

According to About.com, Gerhard Neumann of GE was awarded 8 patents for inventing variable stator vanes. Those patents were either very loosely worded or have long since expired since Pratt and Whitney uses VSVs too. I think Roll-Royce even tried them out once but proved to themselves that and extra spool was the way to go for operability. Even Chrysler used variable stators in their turbine-powered car. Today high end turbochargers have variable vane geometry, too

When did Gerhard Neumann get his patents, and when was the first time Pratt used Variable Guide-Vanes?

The J79 was the first engine to use VSVs and it was a 1950s era engine so I assume the patents were awarded around that time.

I don't know enough about PW to tell you about their use of VSVs. Maybe a Google search will turn up something.

I can't say anything about all of the RR engines, but the RB-211-22B uses VSV's. I used to climb in the cold stream duct to adjust them.
