What is the function of the giant sphere in this video?

Pure guess but if your refering to the moment when the engine is on the test rig it's a filter to stop FOD ingestion?

Cheers,

The large dome you saw is called a TCS dome - for Turbulence Control Structure. Each of the panels you see that make up the dome is about 3in thick and consists of thousands of holes. It's used to smooth out the airflow coming into the engine. Very useful on windy days.

Also...

The sphere is only an approximate shape. Ideally the panels on the dome would be normal to the streamlines of air flow at all points and its shape would form an equipotential surface. In other words, the speed of the incoming air would be the same over the entire surface of the TCS. If you were to actually build on of these to rigorous aerodynamic rules it would actually look like a large misshapen ball of clay... esp if you have a drooped flight inlet on the engine instead of an axisymmetric bellmouth.
