744 Ground Speed 750mph!

Wed May 09, 2007 5:49 pm

just got off a UA 744 flight HKG-ORD yesterday, the "map display" thingy showed us going 750mph ground speed (at FL32) just east of Japan. I have never seen a figure this high on numerous traspac flights, high 600s, just over 700 seems not uncommon. Tailwinds I know can be quite high in that area and this isn't airspeed but is this close to a record?? I assume these map displays which show position etc are pretty accurate, it seemed to be indicating "normally" the rest of the flight.

Apparently, the current record there for a 744 is 731kts, which is about 822 miles per hour (1,316 km/h). The highest speed I recall from being on a 744 was a QF flight where we were doing about 1,150 km/h ( 718 mph / 639kts)

FL32 over the pacific east of japan!??? It's impossible. I bet you meant FL320.

Ground speed has a wind component. It's not unusual to experience 200kt tailwind.

Add 480kts nominal TAS = 680kt = 787mph

I though I remembered a member here who had a picture of his plane doing over 1200 kts ground speed?? Don't remember what topic the pic was posted in though.

I can think of one member here who saw his aircraft do that almost every time. I don't remember him posting a picture of it though.  Wink

Think it could be a good idea to have the lowest speed recorded in cruise as well! Imagine going against the jetstream of 200 knots. Would give your GS to be just around 280!

If you were going 480 AS. If you were only doing 300 AS, that would be a Groundspeed of only 100 MPH.

Bless you for not confusing groundspeed with airspeed and claiming to be the Chuck Yeager of 744 passengers.

MANY years ago, I was on an AA B707 from LAX to DFW and the Captain reported that we were clocking a groundspeed of 740mph. We arrived over an hour ahead of schedule.

My former instrument instructor had a rather "canine" expression for moving along like that. WWII pilots will know the correct phraseology.

I just looked at that "record" site.

It only counts if it was RECORDED by a camera. Which means these speeds almost certainly have been either tied exceeded before, if not on many times. 411A's 728-kt run over FUK-NRK during 1992 would be an example.

Then it would be a good idea to change your altitude, if possible  Smile

In cruise in the CRJ I've seen groundspeeds as low as about 275kts with normal TAS. Headwind of around 175kts right on the nose... going the other direction, or ground speed was over 600kts.

Sonic Boom?

Sat May 26, 2007 12:02 am

This might be a dumb question, but at what point do you break the sound barrier, get a sonic boom, etc? If your ground speed is faster than sound, but only because of an extreme tailwind, what's up?

I'm no expert, but I thought breaking the sound barrier was related to air speed, not ground speed -- and it's the air speed that creates the sonic boom. I still have fond memories of flying my Luscombe 8A into a very stiff headwind, and watching the freeway traffic below blow my doors off. Fortunately, I wasn't going very far.

Correct. If you have a 200 kt tailwind, so does sound, since it's also travelling through the air. You only break the sound barrier if you move faster through the air than sound travels through the same air.

Not a dumb question. Most people don't get this. And you asked it in a nice way. We like that here in Tech/Ops.

Was it the thread I started here? What's Wrong With This IFE Flight Info?

It shows the photo I took of the seat-back IFE. However, on my flight it was definitely erroneous information being displayed because it was showing an absurd measure of time left to cover the remaining distance to destination.
