Would any one know what goes in a desert kit? Apparently this is a requirement of the Libyan CAA.

I imagine it's a kit with the things needed for survival in case one finds themselves with the unpleasant Sahara diversion.

Probably something along these lines (but larger quantities), not for a diversion, but a forced landing in the desert somewhere.. (Think Flight of the Phoenix...)

Not sure if it's a legal requirement, but I believe some carriers also carry polar survival kits on flights that cross the polar regions (e.g. West Coast-Europe, and some of the new longhaul flights to/from Asia etc).

True, Continental 777s (and equipment from other carriers during transpolar operations) carry special kits which include heavy parkas for crewmembers and supplies for dealing with cold weather-specific emergency situations which are not found in standard overwater survival kits.

QF carry polar suits on their Antarctic charter flights.
