Identify This! 3.0

Wed Aug 22, 2007 8:43 am

Well, it's that time of year again....the time when a young man's fancy turns to thoughts of fuselage hatches and APU intakes.

Yes folks, it's the new season of "Identify This"!

For those of you who don't remember, "Identify This" is an aircraft identification game, based on technical, aerodynamic, and mechanical details of aircraft. Last year, an intense competition took place. It was so popular, it had to be extended into part two.

After the smoke had cleared, seven weeks had passed. There were 14,000 views, 578 posts, and 82 individual aircraft shots. To this day, the number of discarded relationships, neglected marriages, and divorce hearings remains unknown. The final point standings were:

Lowrider - First place winner  checkeredflag
3DPlanes - Second place winner  checkeredflag
Scooter01 - Third place winner  checkeredflag
Curmudgeon - 7
KELPkid - 6
KBFIspotter - 5
JetMech - 5
474218 - 4
Francoflier - 4
ZanL188 - 4
Speedracer1407 - 2
Ilikeyyc - 2
Oly720man - 2
Boeingfixer - 2
FLY2HMO - 1
MissedApproach - 1
Legoguy - 1
N231YE - 1
Jdl1527 - 1
GQfluffy - 1
Starlionblue - 1
MrChips - 1
Starglider - 1

Although some great prizes were won and everyone had fun, there will be a few changes for this year's contest:

First, guesses will be submitted to me directly, via the contact link in my profile.

  • This will give everyone a fair shot. This way, nobody will have to wake up at 4am to see the current aircraft and submit a guess.
  • Contestants will receive one point each for a correct guess. A correct guess must include the manufacturer, model number (if applicable), and model name (if applicable).
  • When submitting a guess, please include "Identify This" in the subject line to help me organize the emails.

Second, I will attempt to post a new aircraft every other day. Due to my travel schedule, I won't always be able to adhere to this, but I'll do my best.

Third, the prizes will be awarded in a different manner. Rather than offer predetermined prize packages (like last year), there will be a total of TEN prizes. They will be awarded in the following manner:

  • The first-place winner will have his/her choice of FOUR prizes.
  • The second-place finisher will have his/her choice of THREE of the remaining prizes.
  • The third-place finisher will have his/her choice of TWO of the remaining prizes (after the winner and runner-up choose their prizes).
  • The fourth-place finisher will receive the remaining prize.

The contest will conclude on September 30, 2007. If there is a tie, we will go into a "sudden death" round to determine the winner.

Prizes are being provided by myself and Lowrider. If you live in Outer Umbrellastan, I may ask you to chip in for shipping, but only in extreme cases.

Here they are:

Concorde, by F.G. Clark and Arthur Gibson:

U.S.A.F.E., by Michael Skinner:

The Legend of Cessna, by Jeffrey L. Rodengen:

Inside the Sky, by William Langewiesche:

Stick & Rudder, by Wolfgang Langewiesche:

1977 Cessna Skyhawk Pilot's Operating Handbook:

Piperjet promotional brochure and souvenir button:

Hondajet promotional poster:

High-quality Eclipse Concept Jet promotional poster

- As far as I know, these were only made available at the launch of the ECJ during it's unveiling at Airventure 2007 in Oshkosh, Wisconsin.

Bell-Boeing BA609 Tiltrotor Package

Includes the following:

- Freestanding calendar
- Two different brochures
- Informational CD-ROM
- BA609 tie tac

And so, here is the first aircraft:

http://i15.tinypic.com/4trgdmv.gif

For the record, I'm going to make this round just a bit more difficult than the previous rounds. Last year, all but one of the aircraft were correctly identified. This year, there may be three or four.  biggrin

Remember....don't post your guesses here. Send them to me via the contact link in my profile.

Good luck!

Or, how about a brand new Eclipse 500 (oh, I'd fight 'till death in a fierce competition if that was a prize)

So then multiple right answers for any given a/c means multiple points awarded (one per user)? Or will these be so hard that just one correct answer is a minor miracle?  Wink

Good job re-doing the rules this time around, 2H4...I remember:

That's right. If ten people correctly identify this first aircraft, then each person will have earned one point. Those with the most points at the end of the contest win the prizes.

Remember, everyone....include your A.net username when submitting guesses. I don't want to post your real name next to your score when posting points.

Since the guessing is "private" and should not be compromised, may I suggest an alternative scoring system that should help to prevent ties.

10 points for first fully correct guess. Getting it right is thus heavily favored.
1 point for a correct guess that came in after the first but before a winner was announced. Token point to be used as a tie-breaker.

P.S. I still suck at this.

I'm going to miss the intense competition, the thrill of waking up at 4am to find out what the people on the other side of the Atlantic had been up to in their evening... -but this is only a ME thing.  duck

As I have gotten to know 2H4, I have full expectations that this version will be just as good, maybe even better than the previous rounds since he has had more than 6 months to plan for this devious challenge.

I'm in on this new challenge and I hope that most of the previous competitors also will be.

David L hit the nail on the head. As we have many players around the world, I don't want to timing into account at all. Players shouldn't be penalized for living on the backside of the clock.  Smile

Yep. If ten people correctly identify the aircraft, ten points will be awarded.....one point to each person who correctly identified it. I based it on the system used by Aviaquiz.

Question: what measures are in place to prevent people from posting their answers on the thread? There's bound to be a few fools who do so, and whose answers stay up for hours before being reported and deleted. Have you made a special arrangement with the mods, or are you relying everyone's vigilance?

No official measures are in place, but I don't think it will be a problem. Because the shots will be challenging, I have to believe that an individual stupid enough to ruin things for everyone won't be intelligent enough to actually identify the aircraft in the first place.

If it does happen, the shot in question will be canceled and replaced with a new one. And although I'm not a moderator, I'll make every effort to have the individual banned.

Beyond that, it will be up to all of you to then make every effort to ostracize the individual.  Wink

Yes, it’s a Basler BT-67 Turbo-67! Here’s an example of the complete aircraft:

Oly720man - 1

Other guesses included:
- Convair 240 fuselage equipped with a Pratt & Whitney PT-6
- De Havilland DH-106 Comet 1

Remember, guesses must include 2-3 parts:
- Manufacturer
- Model number (if any)
- Model name (if any)

“DC-3 converted to turbine”, for example, won’t cut it.

If an aircraft has no name, submit your guess like this:

Manufacturer: Boeing
Model: 737
Name: none

By the way....if anyone here is willing/able to whip up an HTML form we could use to submit guesses, that would be wonderful. We would need four fields: Manufacturer, Model Number, Model Name, and A.net Username. We would also need a button that, when clicked, would submit the guesses to my email address. Please contact me if you’d be interested.

On to the next aircraft!

Guesses for this one will be due by Saturday, August 25th at 3pm.

Good luck!

Are we allowed to recant our guesses? For example, let's say I guess an aircraft, but change my mind thinking its wrong, before the deadline. Or is this a "once you hit the send button, your done until the next aircraft" sort of deal?

Special thanks to Josep Tomas for the excellent shot. It's not every day you see a Corvette from that angle. In flight, no less. His other great shots can be seen here.

Onward!

Guesses for this one will be due by Monday, August 27th at 6pm. I'm going to be travelling this week and next, so please be patient if I don't post the results and new shot right away. It might be difficult to get a chance to update things. Rest assured, though, I'll get to it eventually.

So, which prizes are looking most desirable this year?

For the next round, I'd like to offer some more unique items, but most of the crap aviation memorabilia I have left is stuff I want to keep. Maybe this year's top five finishers could each donate an item or two for the next round.

Thanks, and keep up the good work!

Oh, by the way....the current shot is a photograph of a photograph. The yellowish blobs are probably petrified remnants of a cheeseburger, and can be ignored.

Woo! thanks to Jane's Aircraft guide for helping with that last one!

...I somehow don't think this one is in the guide though...

....You two snuck your guesses past me via the private message interface..

I can't speak for my partner in single-pointdom but as that is the last point I am likely to score it does matter to me.

Do you feel good enough to let me pillage your garage and attic for future "Identify This" prizes?  eyebrow

If your stories are any indication, you're sitting on a veritable museum. I can only imagine the narrated tour:

"Ah yes, that's a section of fuselage from the sole example of a three-engined turboprop L-19. I had to put it down in the jungle and cut my way out with my machete. I used that piece of aluminum as shelter...it saved me from some nasty typhoons. Later, I cut it down to use as a piece of chest armor to protect me from the natives. That's where the arrowheads came from. If I hadn't had my leather whip, I would never have been able to swing across that ravine and hike the 70 miles back to the base. From that day on, I always made a point to bid only for domestic trips"

Well, anything but my toolbox or my wife's car.
Or the contents of my freezer.
Oh, no railroad or logging artifacts either.

Ooh, Ooh, I totally know what number 3 is... it's Concorde right? No, but seriously, anyone confident on this plane? I feel my streak may be at an end (does 2 count as a streak?). Well, back to the mines for me.
I didn't get a 'Harumph' outta that guy!

Confident? No. Pretty reasonable suspicion, and suitably obscure enough to tickle 2H4's fancy? Yes.

Tom.
