How Much Do Airline Seats Weigh?

Tue Nov 13, 2007 6:16 am

I was wondering this today while dreaming of bizjets and thinking about whether a bizjets interior would weigh more than an airlines(I came to the conclusion that a Gulfstream would be more than a Dash 8's, and a BBJ would be less than a 737).

How much does your average seat weigh? What about the SQ A380 F ones (including the doors/walls)? Is the weight of all the seats included in the payload? So with that one, if say a planes payload is 50 000lbs, do you minus 10 000 or so that the seats weigh?

How much do bizjet seats weigh aswell?

I cannot give an exact weight because there are variations in sizes from airline to airline.

Airline seats are designed to be lightweight, but at the same time strong and fire resistant. A typical design is an aluminum frame with blocks of urethane foam attached to it. A layer of fire-resistant fabric, for instance Kevlar, goes over this, and at the top is a layer of cloth or leather.

Recent designs reduce a seat's weight by up to 15 pounds. A typical seat in economy class now weighs 74 to 82 pounds.

Hope that helps.

It varies a lot by the design, class, IFE etc, number of seats in a bench, and other things, but as we reconfigure our Hawkers regularly I can say that a 2-seat "bench" that is found on our HS748s (I would think that economy seats on Dash 8s, ATRs etc, would be fairly similar) can be lifted and carried on by one person. They start to feel little heavy after a while, but really aren't as heavy as they look. However, getting it up/down the ladder to go in and out of the aircraft usually is much, much easier with two people. The 2-seat J class benches and 3-seat Y class benches on our 737s can be moved by one person around a reasonably flat area easily, but to lift up stairs etc. takes two.

Depends when they were made. Are they 9G or 16G? With or without IFE? Doubles or tripples? A business class seat assembly(Weber 7070 series) for MAXjet weighs 182 pounds, a coach double for an MD-80 wieghs 37 pounds. Some of the seats for the BizJets weigh more as they are more luxurious, they have all the gadgets and gizmos the rich and shameless need for their trips.

Sounds about right. They do have some weight to them, but can easily be picked up and carried by one person. Business class seats though are kinda heavy.
