Pilots: What Airports Do You Like Most/least?

Tue Mar 04, 2008 10:21 pm

As above - just curious to know, which airports do you like/enjoy most to fly into, and which ones are not so good?

Are there any you particularly dislike, and why?

Are there any approaches for example you do not look forward to, or find a bit scary?
What do you mean you dont have any bourbon? Do you know how far it is to Houston? What kind of airline is this???

I always like the approach into LHR! it is annoying because of a lot of traffic, but at good weather you have a lovely view over the city and the Tower Bridge etc etc! Its like a nice sightseeing tour!
Of course HAM because I live there! Its like coming home!
GOT: all the green areas there, trees, nice landscape, lovely!
HKG: departure over the city! great!!! WHat a view!
GVA: over the lake into the airport! LOVELY view

Dislike:
BIO: tricky because of mountains and the terrain, steep approach, short runway... Same with SOF
TSE: weird winds there you cannot really tell what it is doing there ...
JNB 03R because of the "aircraft carrier" landing! And the weird bump in the runway Big grin

had an unpleasant experience there - never again.

I loathe KJFK, KLGA, and KPHL. I also try and avoid KDCA and KDFW as much as possible.

I like PHNL, KCVG, KCLT, and KMSP for various reasons, not all strictly to do with flying.

My favorite: ORD when the weather is good, early in the morning before the delays pile up. It's neat to see such organized chaos work out.

Least favorite: ORD at any other time.

Hi

My husband who is a Captain on the Boeing 772 says he loves LHR, JFK, MIA and SFO due to their lay out and runways…

He dislikes LAX, MCO, ORD and TLV – once again he said something about STAR’s and runway lay out’s

Current Favorite, Anchorage. Easy to operate out of, nice scenery, good overnight, minimal delays
Current Least Favorite, Newark. It could almost be the opposite of Anchorage.

Others that I like, Miami, Hong Kong, Honolulu

Favorite would be Oshkosh, Wisconsin, because of the memories of great times with great friends that I associate with it.

Another favorite would be Willow Run airport near DTW. My great-grandmother riveted B-24s together there many years ago, and a dearly departed friend of mine used to fly Electras from the place in the '90s.

I enjoy YIP from an operational standpoint, too. During the day you often have the place to yourself. Once, while approaching the airport for pattern work, the controller said "Cessna XXX, wind light and variable, enter left base for.........well, which runway would you like?" I chose 32, since I'd never flown from it. Later, I switched to 27R so I could fly low approaches over the Yankee Air Museum's outdoor collection.

Also, there are usually some pretty interesting things to see parked at YIP.

One of my least favorite airports is called Triple H. Ironically, although I lived about 7 miles away from the place for several years, I wasn't at all aware of the airport identifier when I chose my username. I never liked the approach to 27, particularly on hot, humid days with thermals and shear. I found the winds difficult to predict, and wasn't a fan of the trees along the end and sides of the approach end of the runway.
