A330 With Two Strobe Lights

Sun Mar 30, 2008 6:31 pm

Was looking at some video of an A330 landing in Manchester and noticed on the top-side of the fuselage this aircraft with two strobe beacon lights much like the L-1011-500.

Why did Airbus add a second strobe to this aircraft and not any of the other's, including the A380?

Those are anti-collision lights on the fuse. Strobe lights are on the wingtips.

Yes, but why two anti-collision beacons on the top much like the L-1011-500. The A380 has only one and it's alot wider than the 330.

I have never seen an A330 with 2 anti collisions lights on the top! one is on the top and one at the bottom! Maybe it just looked like one? Dunno...

Watch closely at the top.

While the A330 is approaching I can only see 1 anti collision light on the top! once it has passed the camera you can see two! So I assume it has something to do with the light situation and the camera... It looks like two but there is just one.
And a little later in that video you can see the A330 coming across you during daylight and there you can only see one anti collision light on the top as well.

Like the others who have replied to this thread, I've never noticed more than one anti-collision beacon/strobe on top of the A330. But regarding wing strobe lights, the A330 (as well as every other Airbus aircraft) does indeed have two strobe lights on the leading edge of each wingtip, compared to just one for Boeings and most other aircraft (the DC-10/MD-11 and Embraer E-Jets also have 2). It sorta looks like one strobe light flashing twice, but its actually 2 lights flashing in quick succession.
Many older planes such as some 747 classics (none of UPS' 741's/742's nor DC-8's have wing strobes) don't even have wingtip strobes lights, as I don't believe they were mandated until around 1985.
Did the L-1011 have rotating beacons like the 741 or flashing anti-collision strobes on the top?

The Eastern L-1011's were rotating beacons and not strobes.

I know that the Columbus Blue Jackets Hockey Team has a DC-9-32 with 2 top ACL's. Now did this type of 9 have 2 ACL's???

Yep, 2 of them side by side.

I assume that this is for visibility with the electronics hump on the top. One light behind it won't be seen from the front so they have one either side. There may also be aerodynamic reasons. One light in the wake of the hump may experience excess vibration/fatigue due to turbulence in the wake. Moving them sideways a bit puts them out of the wake of the hump.

My guess is the second light is to provide coverage at angles the radomes may block. The FAA required Legend to do this on their DC9s because they had added satellite antennas (radomes). Perhaps the Blue Jacket's DC9 is a former Legend airframe.
I don't understand everything I don't know about this.

That makes more sense now. I didnt know the 330's had them. That is the first time I have ever seen anti-collision strobe lights like that. I have, however, seen the two rotating lights on top of EA & DL's L-1011's.
