After a little research I found the picture 2H4 used as well. Good luck to the rest of the contestants.

And the correct answer is:

Bennett/Waitomo (Pellarini) PL-11 Airtruck

There were a few clues with this one. The main one was the landing gear....both the style (burly trailing link) as well as the configuration (short wheelbase, fixed). The engine gave it away as a PL-11 and not a PL-12. Finally, some might have recognized that the vertical cylindrical shape behind the engine cowl is a pesticide hopper.

The PL-11 led to the PL-12:

Bennett/Waitomo (Pellarini) PL-11 Airtruck

Oh, for crying out loud...I wasn't even close! I kept getting hung up on several things:

1.) I assumed that that was a test stand or a maintenance stand, not actual landing gear.

2.) I too readily dismissed the hopper as background clutter that only appeared to be be connected...

...and 3.) I kept getting hung up on the fact that the steering wheel in the car is on the right side of the vehicle.

Ah well...I think I should have a bit more luck on this next one. If I don't, I'm afraid I'm losing my airplane mojo!

Good one, 2H4!

I know! I keep kicking myself for not pursuing that angle further. Honestly, I got brain-lock and couldn't get myself past the fact that I thought I already knew the engine, but just couldn't figure out which plane it came from. Alas, I was wrong on all counts!

Quoting 2H4 (Reply 107):

North American AT-6 Texan converted to an airship engine

These guesses weren't too far off the mark as the engine for the PL.11 was taken from the Harvard, which was the RAF/RAAF/RCAF name for the Texan.

Slight correction to the score, folks. Both KBFIspotter and Scooter01 correctly identified the PL-11, but I forgot to flag their answers in my mailbox and thus, never gave them credit.

So the current score actually looks like this:

Sure. I love great Danes. They are among the coolest of dogs. As someone put it, "no dog can as casually steal a hot dog from a passerby's hand".

BTW and still totally off topic. Our Boxer puppy is coming in 4 weeks. If you are flying SYD-HKG late next month, give an extra thought to your furry passengers downstairs.

I'm pretty sure the car is a Hillman Minx (Series III). A late 50s early 60s British car. The first car my father had, which is why it looks so familiar to me.

http://lh4.ggpht.com/_PFjMi5EIaeM/Ro...Y/Hillman+Minx+Series+III+rear.jpg

Certainly not a Wolseley, or any of the Pininfarina Morris variants.

But one I had a had a potential ID and examined enough examples, I could see why someone might think the something was missing, even though it is completely possible that is present. I have yet to pitch a no-hitter, so we're going to go ahead and kick it up a few notches.  mischievous

By the way....there are two possible answers for this one, and I'll accept either one.

Indeed it was. But alas I had no clue they came with 3 props as well, that's what I thought was wrong in the picture as if it had been a 4 bladed there would have been at least 2 other blades visible.

A couple notches? Sheesh! I haven't worked on the ramp in years! This is the farthest I've made it in one of these, and I hope I don't blow it now.

Seriously though...thanks for doing these contests. I really enjoy seeking out the answer, and I run into a lot of nice shots I've never seen along the way. It also keeps my mind going non-stop and if I'm not learning new stuff, I'm remembering things I'd long ago forgotten.

I've run a couple small contests on my own website before, but nothing of this caliber yet. You're inspiring me to get more creative!

I think I know what you think is wrong, and I think you're wrong about thinking it! I think I thought the same thing then I thought again and think I'm thinking clearly. This is obviously clearly dependant upon whether or not what I am thinking is what I think you are thinking of...and it isn't, but it is, but I could be wrong. So there!

On this note, and for those who need something to do because they (like me) can't actually identify aircraft, here's a nice primer on missile guidance:

We're still doing aircrafts, right?
I'll do my own airline. With Blackjack. And hookers. In fact, forget the airline.
