I'm fairly sure I know what the pictured apparatus is, and if I'm correct then there is a relatively small group of aircraft that would use it. And if I say anything else, I'd be tipping my hand if I'm right. Big grin

From the recent posts I may be in the minority but this was the easiest shot for me so far. When I saw the picture I immediately had a pretty good idea what it was and it took me less than 30 minutes to confirm my guess.

I hope that this ends up being a toughie for some of the other guys. I need to improve my standing. mischievous

Oh maaaannn....I can't even tell you how many times I looked at that friggin' plane!! I KNEW it had to be something like that! LOL! Dang-nabbit...I was even so much closer to this one than the PL-11/PL-12 one.

I started off looking at amphibious seaplanes because of what appeared to be a slab-sided fuselage, thinking the photo was of non-water landing gear which would only be used occasionally on such a craft. My God there are a lot of obscure and butt-ugly seaplanes!

Then realized that what I thought was a fuselage was instead the underside of a probably-folded wing due to the flap tracks at the top of the photo. Unfortunately, I had to give up before I came across a photo of the Osprey with it's wings folded. Sad

Well done! I was absolutely stumped. I kept looking at flying boat beaching gear and then landing gear downlocks. I actually thought about capture mechanisms for folding wing aircraft, but I too quickly ruled them out.

Here are maybe some tips that may help with identification:

At the start of any new devious crop I take in all of the picture and do not go for the main details in first instance. For example, the E-2C wing latch mechanism was not the first thing that gave me a clue to what I was looking at. As others mentioned, at first glance it appeared to maybe the side of a fuselage. But then I started to look closer into the details such as the aileron gap, rivets and fasteners and then I knew I was looking at a wing surface. Why? Because I noticed drain holes in some of the panels. It would be an odd place to have drain holes in the side of a fuselage.

Then I knew, by the sunlight reflecting on the wingsurface, the picture was oriented right side up and that it must be a folded wing. Then it all fell into place since not very many types fold their wings along the side of the fuselage.

Drain holes and sunlight did it for me on this one Smile

I am not long enough into contests like these to be aware that AeroWeanie had not missed one until now. No worries, we all still have a long way to go and nobody is perfect. Most likely also those at the top will miss a few. There is one golden rule I always abide by which is to never underestimate your fellow competitors.

I did see the lettering, but all I could read was "CHI" and also also couldn't identify the paintjob.
I tried to make it clearer in PS but it didn't work. I thought something like "China", but when I saw the picture of the Do728 the pieces all fell together.

I did see the letters, tried to make them more readable and checked all Air China and China Airlines planes. The flap track fairings seemed very similar to the Airbus A32X except that they weren't... Checked all modern Russian/Chinese ones and then gave up. Fairchild/Dornier never crossed my mind! Did this plane ever fly?

To me it was the lack of any emergency-exit walkways on the wing, no red paint around any of the windows in the reflection, the unique spoilers. All I could read from the lettering reflection was "CHI" and some China and Chile opportunities were explored. The almost total lack of a suitable pic in A.Net led me to check out this link:

I first looked at all the usual suspects such as the Embraers and the 737/320 but none of them matched the spoilers in the picture, the spacing and configuration of the hinges were all wrong. I did think about the 728 since I remember the A.Net threads from six years ago when it was cancelled but I could not find any pictures showing the top of the wing.

I eventually noticed the reflection of the fuselage on the wing and saw what appeared to be chevrons and later the "CHI" of Fairchild. I then saw the reflection of the blue ribbon below the windows and I had a match.

The fuel tank access panels on top of the wing were also another clue which are visible in this shot of the prototype being built.

The letters did help clinch the deal. To me, it could only have been a handful of planes anyway...My initial deduction was a fairly small twin, and I came to that conclusion after lightening it up in photoshop and seeing the gentlemans face just behind the wing. Add that to the other person's back visible on the right and I decided it just couldn't be that high off the ground. I checked out the usual suspects one by one and then I remembered the 728 and after I looked at the pics, it was a no-brainer aided by the reflections.

Now, this next one....

No, it didn't. For the first round of "Identify This", I tried to use only production aircraft. Two factors have convinced me to include prototypes:

1 - They're really interesting parts of aviation and aircraft design history

2 - You guys are really good, and if I limited the selection to production aircraft, I'd probably have to start using shots of rivets and ELT antennas to make it challenging for you.

Using prototypes here and there introduces a true "hunt" for the photo and even some historical research, as opposed to having to file through some "usual suspects" in a mechanized manner. The key is to keep a healthy balance of production and prototype aircraft.

As you can see by the shots I've used in IDT 4.0 so far, I like to err very heavily on the "production" side of things. The only other prototype I've used in the game thus far was the Lesher. And I still can't believe so many of you got it*. Wink

The 728 indeed never flew. I would never normally include an aircraft that has never flown, but I thought the history and development of it made it a worthy, albeit devious, inclusion to the game.

The best clues in the 728Jet picture are the lack of slats inboard of the engine pylon and the continuous single exposed element trailing edge flaps. A quick look at other low wing jet transports with wing-mounted engines shows that none of them have this combination of features. My only problems were first remembering the 728Jet and then finding a picture of its high-lift system. The peculiar spoiler shape and the flap track fairing are what did it for me, and I found it very interesting that birds that are similar in weight and category have almost exactly the same flap fairing arrangement, notably the E-190 and Superjet...
