Not exactly just a metaphor. The Junkers Jumo 004B that powered the ME 262 had a rope starter similar to your photo. Pulling on the handle started a small piston engine that provided the power to start the engine. The handle can be clearly seen on the attached video.

I can confidently state that this starter system has never been used on a 747.

Man, talk about a goofy procedure. Where did that come from, an old Air Force C-47 manual or something?

Not really sure of the origins of the procedure but I have heard "Old Pilots Tales" of replacing the 3 people with a pickup......google turned up the link I posted.
Don't think I would want to be around if the motor fired up and the rope got snagged

I'm a bit too young to have first-hand experience, but I've heard those rope-start airplanes were a real hassle to get going. After you finally got the thing to start, you'd have to wait until the pressure built up enough to power the steam gauges...

Well, if it's anything like my rope started lawn care equipment, it can be a bit tempremental when the fuel is old, the temperature is cold, or you flub up priming it before pulling the rope (either too little or too much primer). Heck, my Sears wire trimmer has about a 10 step checklist-like starting procedure printed right on the gas tank. If you follow it to the T, you will (eventually) get a running weed whacker
It isn't just pull the rope and go, unfortunately...almost reminds me of starting a radial, counting prop blades, turning primers off, adjusting choke plates...at least the weed whacker doesn't have a mixture knob to dink with.RE: Rope Start

In fact, you do the opposite: bring it to operating RPM without fuel, and only then introduce any. It has to do with the difference in the way the engines modulate entropy. The Rankine cycle and the Jet cycle are very different thermodynamic processes.
