Had the crew not ignored that the PVD remained shuttered,whould it have saved them from disaster?
The failure of the PVD to unshutter indicated to the flight crew that the aircraft was not at the correct location for takeoff.
Does PVD assist the crew in determining whether the aircraft is on the correct runway or ONLY to provide steering guidance under low visibility conditions for centreline tracking and not to identify the correct location for takeoff?
What is the difference between position and location?
Is PVD merely provide reversionary visual guidance and has no role in other ground operations?
AFM states that PVD will shutter /unshutter dependent upon whether the aircraft is in a position for takeoff or not.
CVR SQ006:
CM-2 "PVD hasn't lined up ah"
CM-1 "Yeah we gotta line up first"
CM-3 "We need forty five degrees" (PVD only arms within 45 degrees of the runway heading).
CM-1 "Not on yet er PVD huh never mind we can see the runway,not so bad" (After lining up,PVD still shuttered as it was not within the valid localizer region for RWY 05L).
EICAS message>PVD SYS CAPT F/O indicates that
*ILS frequency not correctly selected
*Aircraft not withing the valid localizer region
*Aircraft heading not with 45° RWY HDG
*PVD has malfunctioned
*An aircraft is blocking ILS signal

All very interesting, however...SQ did not order PVD's as a line item on their aircraft...IE: not installed.

Yes,All SQ 744 pax are equipped with PVD but not freighters.

As all BA fleet is equipped with PVD thus RVR minimums is 75 metres as opposed to non-PVD fleets which have RVR minimums of 125 metres.

I wish I could fit PVD on the coaming of my YM 2003 Jeep Grand Cherokee!
It is the most aesthetically pleasing item on the FD.
Non-PVD FDs look plain like a Xmas tree without Dolly Parton's bells-and-whistles!

Not bad 3 topics on PVD in 2010 by you... and each one keeps talking about the same thing...
You have already shown us that QF maintenance picture, which shows the PVD in a maintenance check, not itself in action... in each of the 3 topics...
Plus, talking about reducing RVR has been mentioned in 2...
And the SQ006 has been mentioned in 2.
For me, I have simpler rules... if I cannot have adequate visual reference (either centerline lights or edge lights) in poor visibility, I don't power up for take off... simple.
I can also say that PVD equipped FDs is an extra maintenance cost item for most carriers... and makes the FD look like a christmas tree with too much candy hung from it...
Gimme an EVS overlay on an HUD instead of a PVD any day of the week...

You can buy and add those HUDs with EVS on a lot of aircraft... at least HUDs...
Has been available on 320s and 737s for a while !
Slap that and EFB with moving map, and PVD's usability is limited to lowering the take off limits only...
Now, the thing is, all these stuff costs money to buy and maintain, and are rarely used... and the regulations regarding their uses need to catch up...
