APU On MD-80 Series

Mon Sep 13, 2010 4:12 pm

This is probably a dumb question, but where the heck is the APU on the MD-80? I can't ever recall seeing an external vent.

IRC it is in the right engine pylon, in this picture you can see the dirt from the exhaust.

It's above the right engine pylon.

To be more specific, the APU is in the lower aft fuselage, it is mounted transversely just outside of the aft pressure bulkhead. The APU air inlets are on the bottom of the aircraft (there are three of them, two non-ram and one ram air inlet); the APU exhaust is over the right engine pylon. The exhaust is a large oval opening and is really not visible in the photo posted. In the photo posted there is a rectangular exhaust visible, which is also on the left side of the aircraft; these are air conditioning pack cooling exhaust outlets. If you look VERY closely in the photo that Larshjort helpfully posted, you can see a small round hole above the rectangular outlet. That is the inlet for cooling air for the APU exhaust shroud, which is relatively long. If you really know what you are looking for, the exhaust ("hand warmer") for the APU cooling air is just below the right engine as well.

Hope this helps! Remember it's never a dumb question if you don't know the answer!

To answer the original question. The apu is mounted in the belly just behind the aft pressure bulkhead. The inlet is also on the belly which makes it very prone to ingesting any leaking hydraulic fluid leading to smoke in the cabin.

Yes, and for this reason, there is a v-shaped deflector forward of the intakes.

That's why the location for the APU inlet on the 717 is on top. AA has added plastic tubes to extend the drain tubes just forward of the APU inlt. Changing vendors for the the T/R control valve has helped reduce the incidents of skydrol ingestion into the APU. The housings on the older style T/R control valves had a tendency to crack causing a leak that was inevitably ingested.
