Crosswind And Airliners

Sun Dec 26, 2010 3:07 pm

Right now I am sitting in kew west where the wind is blowing. I was wondering if airlines would take there cross wind off of the gust or steady wind- also I wouldn't mind knowing the dcc of an atr, I am flying on
American today.

It depends on the airline. We use half of the gust value.

We are quite cautious.

When flight planning we will not go in if the forecast gust exceeds the crosswind limit.

Crosswind Limit 25Kts, Rwy 36

- TAF of 090/20G26KTS we would not go

- TAF of 090/03G25KTS we would, even though the Gust Component is greater.

Sometimes a crew may refuse the x-wind runway opting for an alternative...this past spring @ JFK while R-31L was closed for construction an AA captain (767/200) refused R-4R as the NW winds were gusting 35+...he said he would be forced to declare an emergency if he could not get 31-R. He did disrupt normal flow into the area by being re vectored...but he was the captain and made the call...who's to argue?...Captain calls it...g
